Voyage Summer Collection

What? Did someone say summer? It is not even spring yet. I know, I know, I have a fresh batch of snow on the ground here too. While we are still hoping for spring Marina Rinaldi is gearing up for summer with their Voyage Summer Collection. Here is a sneak peek at their upcoming styles:

Electric pink and blue seem to be the main colors for this collection. Print pants look like they are here to stay too. This collection seems a bit mature to me in some ways too. Anything catch your eye?

Being a Julep Maven

While Living in Canada

One of the things I love about nail polish is that I can feel glamorous without forking out a ton of money for clothes. The color palettes are endless and can be easily changed to my mood. And with the increased popularity of “nail art” it is even more fun.

A few weeks ago a fashionista I follow on Instagram used the hashtag #julepmaven and implied we all new what that meant. I did not. All I knew was that Julep was a brand of nail polish. I did a quick Google search and found out that the company had a monthly mail order program that allowed fans to sign up for $19.99 (free shipping) and get two “new” nail polishes and a beauty product (all worth over $40) once a month.

The process starts off with filling out a mini survey to give them an idea of your fashion and beauty tastes and they put you into a category (the category can be changed at any time if you think your personality suits another one). The three new products are then based on the category. The great thing about this is it is not blind, the week before they send out the product info in an email letting you know what it will be. If you like it you do nothing, if you do not you can say no and receive nothing or pick something else.

I thought, “Cool, bet they don’t ship to Canada or if they do the shipping is ridiculous.” NOT! I was shocked to find out they do ship to Canada and like in the U.S. the shipping is free. Yes, I was and still am shocked. How awesome is that? I could not help myself. I signed up.

According to their survey I fall into the Boho Glam sense of style: “A dynamic free spirit with a creative eye, your effortlessly chic look pairs earthy neutral tones with fun, vibrant colors.” Well ok, then I can live with that.

The welcome package for Julep Maven.

On February 26, I placed my first Julep Maven order and was told my Boho Glam order, which consisted of one Petra (sparkly purple), and one Lisa (grey) polish, and an essential cuticle oil would be on its way soon. While going through the process I also had the option to purchase additional items at an amazing price. I think there were at least three polish options for $4.99 but I could not pass up the one called, “O Canada”.

I was expecting my first order to take at least three weeks to pass through customs etc. but on March 5th (seven days), my parcel was here. I excitedly opened the 6″ x 6″ black box to find a welcome card, a style card with list of what I get as a style maven: 3 full-size products, monthly treats, a little surprise, 20% off online store products, free shipping on every order. In the center wrapped in pink paper were this month’s products and a little sample of “pedi creme”.

I was so excited, I took a picture for Instagram. Then it hit me. Where’s O Canada? Does it come in a separate parcel? There was no mention of it. That’s weird.

I sent off an email to Julep to let them know that the bottle of O Canada was missing from my shipment. I waited not so patiently for a reply. On March 7, a Maven Customer Service member sent me the following message:

Thank you for reaching out to us. We apologize for the confusion or concern. Add-ons and Maven boxes are typically shipped out separately. We understand that the gap between receiving each items can be frustrating. But we ship these items out separately in order to get some product, if not all out to our Mavens as soon as possible It does take a bit longer to ship to Canada. We sincerely apologize for the delay. All of our packages are shipped via USPS and unfortunately we typically are unable to track packages any further after they have left the US border. We can’t wait for you to get your hands on O Canada!, we think you will find her well worth the wait. We appreciate your patience. If you have any other questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask. Until then, have a great day!

As of March 11 I have not received the add-on but it has only been two weeks since my initial order (and one week since my first package arrived) and as I previously mentioned I was expecting at least three weeks for delivery. I will add an update when the add-on arrives and I will also do an update when my second parcel arrives. In the meantime I am going to enjoy a little bit of Petra and Lisa.

Update: March 12 — The O Canada nail polish add-on arrived today. So that was one week for the Julep Maven order to come and two weeks for the add-on order to come — that is some pretty amazing delivery times from Julep. Here’s what O Canada looks like:

The add-on parcel arrives from Julep.

It’s so sparkly:

With this polish came a card to join Julep Maven and offering 2 free polishes. Since I am already a maven I am assuming I cannot use it so if you want to sign up you might as well try the code: “introtwo”. Let me know if it works or not (if it doesn’t I will remove it from this post).

Fave Top Ten Oscars Dresses

The 85th annual Oscar event was last night. Unfortunately, I was watching from the comfort of my chair at home instead of from the seat next to George Clooney. It was still an enjoyable night of star gazing at celebrities, flowing dresses, coiffed tresses, and a whole lot of tweeting — I tweeted along with fellow tweeters as the events unfolded.

The Oscars are the most extravagant award show and I always enjoy seeing what everyone wears. I love the beautiful garments, jewelry and hair styles and while I do not agree with everyone’s fashion choices I do not want to rip anyone a new one because they made a bad choice in my opinion. But I want to share with you my favorite choices — bare in mind that I probably did not see everyone and that we probably have different tastes.

My Top Ten Picks For

(In no particular order)

The Best Dressed Women of the Oscars.

The Best Dressed Ladies

From left to right:

  • Charlize Theron
  • Octavia Spencer
  • Jennifer Lawrence
  • Jennifer Aniston
  • Halle Berry
  • Jennifer Gardner
  • Adele Adkins
  • Helen Hunt
  • Kerry Washington
  • Reese Witherspoon

And there were a lot of best dressed men that deserve a nod. Especially Daniel Radcliff, Jamie Foxx, Huge Jackman, Eddie Redmayne, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pine, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, George Clooney (of course), Daniel Day-Lewis, and Liam Neeson. With special mention to Samuel L. Jackson for originality.

Simple Hearts and Dots

I am back from my Internet hiatus but am catching up on an overflowing email box and attempting to provide some organization to my week but I wanted to share a quick post with you. Whether you want to decorate your nails for Valentine’s Day or just because you are tired of your usual dots, this how-to tutorial by Polishpedia could not be easier.

If you do not have a dotting tool you can use a bobbypin or shishkabob skewer.

Server Issues and Holiday

I am sorry for the sporadic internet service this month. I have been pulling my hair out with my current hosting company to no avail so the next few days I am switching over my sites to a new one — I cannot take it anymore.

That being said, this month’s giveaway has been extended by another week to allow time for those who could not reach the site to get their entries in.

Hopefully the change over will be completed by Monday as I will be taking a much needed sabbatical away from technology. That’s right, no blogging, no internet, no Twitter, no Instagram, no iPod, no email (not the tv, let’s not go to crazy). It has been a few years since I have had a real break so this will start on Monday and continue through to the following Monday.

I am looking forward to recharging the batteries, getting some painting done and maybe some knitting, if my fingers remember how.

Have a lovely week.

Shop Ardene Online

No, I am not announcing that Ardene is carrying plus sizes but you can now shop all of their accessories online. At the moment you can buy flats at 2/$20; hats, mittens and scarves at 2/$15; necklaces at 2/$15; and earrings at 3/$10.

Here are a few of my favorite picks:

A sample of scarves, earrings, necklaces, rings, and flats from Ardene.

It is super easy to spend a lot of cash at Ardene, and feel like you struck it rich, but along with the low prices comes lower quality — these products are not built to last. That being said it is a great way to add some trendy short-term pieces to your accessory box when you have little cash — or even if you have a surplus.

Sheena Spoofs Weight Watchers

Way back in 2011 I was introduced to the antics of Sheena Snively at MTV Live. Since then I have been following her on Twitter and am subscribed to her YouTube feed. Most of the videos she posts are really over the top craziness but I felt her video Fat Watchers, a spoof of Jessica Simpson’s Weight Watcher’s commercial, would relate to a wider audience:

I think if a celebrity wants to loose weight it is their prerogative to do it how they want to, I just do not think they need to broadcast it by producing an endorsement campaign. Marketing your music is one thing, but marketing a weight loss method/product reminds me of the old snake oil salesman.

Behind the Scenes at Lane Bryant

It is that time of the year again, that is right, “back to school” and new fall lines. I know, I know, my husband (a teacher) has been groaning about the TV ads for a few weeks — I do not blame him really. I hate how advertising is weeks and sometimes months ahead but I also understand it too. But I also like to see what is coming up too. With that in mind here is a teaser video of what to expect from Lane Bryant’s fall collection:

I spotted many “favorite” pieces — the red trench, the animal print dresses, the polka dotted bras, the print pants, the fur collared capelet, the yellow peasant top and all those accessories!

According to Penningtons, 70% of women are wearing the wrong size bra. In an effort to decrease the percentage of a lot of uncomfortable women, they are holding a Bra Fit Weekend — June 2 and 3.

Throughout the weekend they will be offering complimentary bras fittings. Specially trained staff will take your measurements (make sure you are wearing one of your good fitting bras and not a ratty-assed one), do a few calculations, and give you your correct bra size.

You can get a complimentary bra fitting at anytime you visit Penningtons but this weekend there will be draws for free bras every hour, a draw for a special gift basket, and a complimentary outfit for summer.

Here are just a few of the bras I have my eyes on:
