Plus Size Swimsuit Cover-Ups

That’s right it’s January and I’m talking about swimsuit cover-ups. Why on earth would I do that? You guessed it, cruise season! I’ve never been on a cruise but I imagine it involves wearing a lot of sundresses, swimsuits, and cover ups. Unless of course you are taking an Alaskan cruise.

Assuming it is in the sun then Always for Me has a lovely selection of plus size cover-ups for pool side or cruise side. Here are five of my faves ranging in price from $59 to $69 and size from 1x to 3x. They have a lot more styles too (including fashionable and functional swimwear).

Oversized Tops

Making It Big is getting ready for spring with bright oversized tops that are perfect for layering or alone. Each style has other color options to choose from. They have their own sizing system so you’ll have to read that first but their sizing actually extend to a high end range and cost between $75 to $89. Change up the look by adding a thin belt!

Golden Globe Faves

I wasn’t going to mention Golden Globe dresses because pretty much everyone is talking about them… but because everyone keeps talking it makes me want to say something. First, I don’t believe in worst dress lists anymore. I think they are just mean and we already have enough hate based media in the world. I think we should spend more time telling one another how good we look and when we don’t think so we should shut up. No one needs or appreciates having their appearance put under a microscope and really what purpose does it serve other than maliciousness. Hiding behind the “education” viewpoint is a cop out because the same could be said about all the “if you ate better and exercised you wouldn’t be fat” comments. And we all know the real sentiment behind those. Off soap box and on to favorite dress picks for the 2011 Golden Globe Awards. There were so many women in beautiful dresses and it was very hard to limit myself to ten favorites:

Golden Globe Evening Wear

  1. My absolute favorite for the evening was Jennifer Lopez-Anthony
  2. Jane Krakowski showed off her lovely baby bump in a soft blue goddess gown.
  3. Claire Danes was very Hepburn in pink.
  4. Amber Riley was looking particularly Hollywood in her one shoulder gown that highlighted her curves.
  5. Christina Hendricks rocked the red and ruffles.
  6. Milla Jovovich was a model of grace and perfection.
  7. Catherine Zeta-Jones made me green with envy with her subtly sparkling deep green gown.
  8. Christina Aguilera shone in her pop meets Hollywood glam lace overlay gown.
  9. Elisabeth Moss was all wrapped up in her multi-directional gown.
  10. Mandy Moore was electric in this classic blue gown.
  11. Scarlett Johansson was classically divine in her pale lace gown.

It was obvious from the red carpet what colors are going to reign supreme as we go deeper into 2011 — deep green and the palest of pinks.

Target Ventures into Canada

Yesterday while we were driving to Toronto we heard on the radio that Target purchased 30 Zellers stores in Canada and by 2013 would be ready to turn them into Target stores. I’ve heard varying stories on this since then but basically it could mean good things for the plus size shopper.

Target will be a new venue for many plus size shoppers who don’t travel over the border to shop. I’ve been following Target online for a few years and they have an ever growing plus size selection worthy of our money and that I can only assume they offer in-store here as well. Unfortunately at the moment Canadians cannot order online from Target. I’m hoping this new move into Canada will mean they will open up their online shopping to us too.

Neiman Marcus Does Canada

Neiman Marcus, an upscale clothing store in the U.S., now ships to Canada. If you are looking to update your wardrobe you can find plus sizes in their “special sizes” section under “women’s”. A little complicated but they make it easier by allowing you to pick a category and search for your size. On the down side, the shipping is a little pricy (but they use a border mediator) and there are no plus size models (boo). But look at these lovely fashions in sizes up to 3x:

Canadian Outerwear

If you live in the Vancouver, BC area you have the option of visiting Babs Studio Boutique. Occasionally they get to Toronto to participate in hand-craft shows; unfortunately, there is no option to shop online. But if you fall in love with something on their website it wouldn’t hurt to email them to find out if they would accommodate you shipments. At the very least, sign up for their newsletter to keep abreast of events. They are one of the few stores that caters to sizes 2 to 26. It is a small boutique with a nice offering of clothing including these original coats from their 2010/11 Fall/Winter collection. I especially love the lavender waterproof linen coat and the sky blue raincoat.
