Updated Polka Dots

It is no secret that I love dots. Big ones, little one, symmetrically spaced or not. And it is becoming apparent that Evans really likes dots too as I am really seeing lots of dots over there. Dots are a universal pattern. They work on tops, bottoms, lingerie and accessories. No I would not wear them all together (but I might be tempted)– that would be pretty painful for onlookers. But Evans does have great spotted pieces to add to your wardrobe:

Pretty Plus Size Day Dresses

Sometimes an all over body pattern can be overpowering which is why I love pattern block dresses like these two from Igigi. The way they are designed makes them look like two pieces (blouse and skirt) especially if you add a wide belt.

The Celeste Dress (left) is $125 and the Catalonia Dress (right) is $130 but both dresses are available in sizes 12 to 32. These dresses are very similar at first glance but the sleeves and neckline are completely different and as you can see from the different styling (one with boots and cuff the other with pumps and a chunky necklace) they are versatile.

Nail Art Pen Review

Last week I picked up a black Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen. I have been wanting to put lady bugs on my finger tips for well over a year now and the concept of using a pen over trying to do it with a regular nail polish brush was definitely more exciting. Sally Hansen Nail Art Pen in box

The pens can be bought at pretty much any drug store with a cosmetic section for about $8. There are about eight colors to choose from. The pen reminds me of those mini art paint pens that you had to shake to keep the paint flowing except more eco-friendly. There is obviously something in the pen to keep it mixed because I can hear it moving around when I shake it. The tip of the pen is actually hard and it fills up with polish the first time you press down on it (on paper to get it ready).

The Nail Art Pens must be applied to a prepared nail, either a base coat or a full nail polish. I highly recommend doing your strong hand first. I made the mistake of doing my left hand first (I am right handed) and I found it really awkward to do my right hand with damp nails. I would also practice drawing straight lights with pen on paper with your non-dominant hand just to practice.

Because the nail art pens are made with a water based formula it is imperative that you cover your nail art with a clear top coat to protect all your hard work.

For my first time using the product I am actually quite happy with the results and hope to improve my pen painting skills with further use. My nails are really short (summer nails for garden work) at the moment as you can see in the photo so I am looking forward to using it in the fall when my nails are longer. And possibly experimenting with the white for a black french manicure. If you are looking for a different way to dress up your nails that is pretty much hassle free and fun then I highly recommend giving the Nail Art Pens a try.

BoopyDoodle Jewelry

Ok, this cute shop had me hooked by the name before I even got to the online front door. BoopyDoodle is a Calgary based company that offers a mixture of affordable vintage and whimsy looking jewelry in this easy to surf website. Everything is nicely categorized by Type (rings, necklace, bracelet etc), Theme (polka dots, hearts, bows etc), Style (vintage, rockabilly, kitsch etc) or color. Here are a few of my favorite pieces ranging in price from $18 for the chili charm bracelet (so cute) to $33 for the polka dot bangles.

The Statement Necklace

If you have not figured it out yet, Etsy is an excellent online source for finding unique pieces of jewelry (as well as plus size clothing). I came across this Fire Engine Red Branch Coral Statement Necklace by GEMLYN today and I think it would be an absolutely fabulous way to dress up that old boring black dress (or grey/navy/white…)  in your closet. It is definitely a statement piece! It is available at Etsy for $118. Too expensive for your pocket book? Have a look around Etsy and you will find jewelry designers who offer their wares in all price ranges.

Maroon Wool Fedora

I know it seems a bit premature to start talking about wool but even though we might not be ready temperature wise the fall lines are starting to roll out at a fast pace including Avon. One of my favorite pieces from the Mark brochure is the Foxy Maroon Fedora (259-417). It is 100% wool with a faux leather band and is only $30. It is a perfect color for ringing in fall — that is if fall ever gets here. But who’s rushing?
