Tunics and Tights

One of the hottest trends this past year has been tights and leggings. Honestly, I was really slow to warm up to them. Mostly because women are trying to wear them with just about anything and most can get away with it. But lets be clear. Tights, even “opaque” ones are to be worn with clothing like skirts and dresses — things that cover the ass. Leggings on the other hand are a wonderful addition for showing off long colorful tunics.

Over at Making It Big they have some great tunics that appear longer than the standards. Depending on how tall you are they might border on a skimpy dress (still only leggings, no tights). Here are a few of my favorites from Making It Big. I would pretty much add a belt to all of them. They are available in sizes 2x to 8x (read their sizing as they have their own). These ones range in price from $60 to $89:

Making It Big also carries capri and regular length plus size leggings. I recommend regular length leggings over the capri (unless you’re petite) only because they are more versatile. If you want the capri look you can always scrunch up the regular length legs to the proper height whereas you’re pretty much stuck with the capri length cut. Their leggings are available in sizes 2x to 8x in colors black, brown, and navy, for $39. If you are looking for a wider assortment of colors visit We Love Colors which has oodles of colors up to size 3x for $29.

Other important accessories to keep in mind: wide belt, wide calf boots, flats.

Outerwear Where?

In some parts of Canada, like say Eastern Ontario, it is still winter. I woke up to 10cm of freshly fallen snow. That isn’t a complaint. I’ve been waiting for the real white stuff for months. Better now then say, April? Plus Size Plaid Suka Winter Coat

If you are still looking for plus size outerwear for the remaining months of the season (if you are in B.C. I really don’t want to hear about what you’re wearing), Maximum Woman has some great prices at their site. Like this Suka belted wool coat for $59.99 (reg. $150). They currently have sizes 1x and 3x in this style. There a few other nice styles in sizes 1x and 2x.

In the mean time, keep warm spring will be here before you know it!

Laura Canada Looks into Spring

If you haven’t been into Laura Plus in a while, now would be a good time. The beginnings of their spring collection are being rolled out for you to try on between now and April. Stop by their website for a preview before you go (but bear in mind that not all stores will carry everything).

Most of the styles on the website fall into the career or mature category but I absolutely love these two formal dresses. A hot trend to look for this spring is pleats. This teal pleated dress totally takes advantage of it. Most of what I’ve seen has been large pleats but I really love the corregated look of the small pleats and it pops even more with the satiny finish on the short jacket. It is listed as $275. I never tire of polka dots and thankfully they never seem to go out of style. This sassy polka dot dress from Laura Plus is so hot. I love the graduated dots and pink sash. It is listed for $225

15% off at Ardène Everyday

I was at Ardène’s today. It was one of those drive by stops — I was walking by going some where else and couldn’t resist the loud music and bright atmosphere. Not to forget all those 5 for $10 signs! Hair Accessory

I picked up five headbands. One for every day of the week. All completely different in style, texture and material. My bangs are getting to that unruly stage and until I decide what I want to do with them these will help give me a new look every day. Ok, the little effort part was enticing too.

While I was there I learned if you sign up for their VIP card you can get 15% off all purchases. That is HUGE savings. And unlike many other VIP programs, Ardene’s is free. I just finished signing up online where you can create a wish list.

Turquoise Cuff Bracelet

Ok, I haven’t seen New Moon yet but it is zipped (Zip.ca) for March. I have however seen Twilight twice (and read all the books). As you know there have been t-shirts galore with team Edward (yeah! team Edward) or team Jacob. But I also keep seeing jewelry pieces inspired from these movies, Bella’s in particular.

Bella Inspired Cuff Bracelet

This Turquoise Cuff Bracelet is at the top of favorites. It’s currently on sale at Emitations for $19.99. While I’m definitely on the team Edward side, this cuff bracelet looks more like something Jacob could have given Bella.

Luv the design and the turquoise silver combination. It would look awesome with a boyfriend blazer, sleeves rolled, of course, to show it off.

Plus Size Denim Jeans

If you are still looking for plus size jean options but can’t seem to find any with style locally, then check Svoboda. They are one of the leaders in plus size fashion when it comes to jeans. They recently released a treasure trove of choices in sizes 10 to 24. Don’t be alarmed by the lack of updates with the rest of the site, they are still in business.

My absolute favorites are:

The Malibu Blue Five Pocket Knit Denim Leggings, $128. The fat girl’s version of the skinny jean that is perfect worn with one of the most popular trends this year –high boots.

Plus Size Denim Jeans from Svoboda

The Black Licorice Five Pocket Jean, $128. A skinny leg jean but not to the extreme and in black. These are suitable for boots but don’t look wonky if worn with heels.

Svoboda's Plus Size Denim

The Blue Widow Spider Five Pocket Jean, $138. I admit it, the name caught my attention first but this is a great every day jean.

Plus Size Denim from Svoboda

The last two pair of jeans are made with 28% Elastarell instead of Spandex. Elastarell is supposed to hold its shape longer and offer a better fit.

Carlos on Sale

One of my favorite shoe designers is Carlos Santana, yes, the musician. I’ve blogged about this brand numerous times at Five Favorite Part One. I’m serious crazy for Carlos shoes, especially the deep red hues. For the next two days Shoes.com has them listed for 20% off. Here are a multitude of favorites ($63 to $120):

The Boyfriend Blazer

One of the gotta have essentials for this season is the “boyfriend blazer”. Whether you are attached or not you should take advantage of this versatile fashion trend. How to wear the boyfriend blazer.

A few suggestions on how to wear a plus size boyfriend blazer:

  • With striped tunic, leggings, and knee high boots.
  • With a tee/tank, jeans, and motorcycle boots.
  • With a sleeveless cocktail dress and dressy booties.
  • With a flowing skirt, cami, and flats.

The Kenneth Cole boyfriend blazer shown here is from Nordstrom’s in regular and plus sizes. It is available in olive or black for $109.

The Boyfriend Blazer

Plus size girls can take advantage of the latest hot fashion trend — the boyfriend blazer — whether they have a boyfriend or not. Forever21’s plus size line Faith21 has an affordable black one for $40 in xl and 1x.

The boyfriend blazer is a necessary versatile piece for this season. Wear it with tee/tank and motorcycle boots; or with a sleeveless cocktail dress and dressy booties; or with a flowing skirt, cami, and flats.

Yoga Starter Kit

If you are considering taking up yoga or have been practicing it for a while and wish to solidify your commitment you need to check out Yoga Accessories. They have a starter yoga that includes a 1/4” Extra Thick Deluxe Yoga Mat, a 6′ Pinch Buckle Cotton Yoga Strap, a Large Nylon Zippered Yoga Mat Bag, two 3” Foam Yoga Blocks, and a Traditional Mexican Yoga Blanket. It is currently $59.99 (reg. $89.99). There is a drop down menu for each item allowing for choice of color. Personally, I love the red shown, but my mat is POWER purple.

If you already have a mat but can’t afford a whole kit I highly recommend getting a strap. Straps are an ingenious tool for plus size yoga practitioners. They allow for deeper poses and aid when some parts are not as reachable as others. Love my strap.

Some plus size women don’t like the rectangular yoga mats (when it comes to floor work they spill over). Yoga Accessories has the coolest looking round mat. It’s a bit pricey for the occasional practitioner but if your practice is more than a couple times a week it may be right up your alley.

I’ve also included a link below for a few reviews so be sure to check them out too.
