Fun with Print Dresses

Penningtons summer fashion book is full of dresses. Some of the dresses are in store but most of them will be available in May so keep checking the website and your local store for updates.

With this first set of dresses the last one on the right is my favorite. I love the multicolored chevron stripes and the dress is an excellent length.

With this set, again, I love the one on the far right with its interesting mesh of different prints (want those shoes too).

I am seeing a mixed print theme with Penningtons plus size summer dresses. The one on the left is very pretty but I wish it was either longer or shorter.

Penningtons ships throughout the U.S. and Canada so you do not need to have a store in your town to shop there.

Mint and Black

This plus size mint top with black accent strip and roll-up sleeves is from Addition-Elle.

For me, mint on its own is a pretty bland color but add some black it and really begins to sizzle. Addition-Elle has this cute sheer mint top with black accents on their site in sizes 14 to 26.

Personally I prefer the “roll-sleeve” rolled instead of unrolled like they have in the first photo.

The cami you see here does not come with the blouse and is sold in the same color or many others — black would look equally fetching.

Grey Jeans

Grey seems to be a hot color from everywhere from home decor (towels, paint, pillows…) to clothing (it has transcended the new black slot to become a featured color). I have embraced grey as well. We put grey tiles in the front entrance and bathroom and I painted the kitchen grey. I would like to get some medium grey towels for the bathroom at some point but have not found ones I love yet. I do however love these grey plus size jeans from Carmakoma.

I love the intentionally faded spots on thighs and rump and the unique buttoned waistline. Grey is a great base color that goes with anything like its black sister but I love it best with red.

New Fashions for Winnipeg

If you live in Winnipeg, Manitoba and you are plus size you now have a new place to shop for exciting plus size fashions. Jaime Mackenzie has opened the J. Mackenzie Fashions boutique at 525-B St. Anne’s Road.

At the moment she is carrying fashions like dresses, tops, skirts, and leggings from brands like Igigi, SwakDesigns, and Kiyonna.

If you shopped at these stores online separately you would have to pay separate shipping and duty costs for each order. You can shop for all the brands in-store or order from their pretty online store — shipping is pretty reasonable at $10 to $14 or free if you purchase at least $175.

L’oreal Telescopic Mascara

A mascara I love at the moment for long lashes is L’Oreal’s Telescopic Shocking Extensions. It really is like “liquid extensions” in a tube especially for me as I do not consider my eyelashes very long or very lush. I have been using it for a few weeks and love the length. And so far no clumping or flaking which is a bonus. I have especially sensitive eyes since I had eye surgery five years ago and have experienced no irritation with this mascara — no flaky either — which is often the route of my eye irritation.

As you can see from the before and after pictures this mascara gave me considerable length and thickness. I actually like the short bristles and found I was able to get more coverage than a long bristle fluffy wand which never really get’s between my lashes. I was actually able to comb my lashes with this wand. In case you are wondering about the colour I chose black/brown as I find straight black too harsh with my blue eyes.

You can pick up this mascara at your local Shopper’s Drug Mart or any department store with a good cosmetics section.

It is never too early to get ready for swimsuit season and Always For Me makes it pretty easy all year long. This season they are introducing their newest collection, Always for Me in Control Swimsuits. Their built-in control panels are designed to “smooth the tummy and minimize the hips” — beyond that, I find control top swimwear tends to stay in place better when you are active in the water. Remember Dusters

Plus size sheer duster from Ulla Popken.

If you remember “dusters” then you are getting to be a certain age. Guess what, you can dust off the ones in your closet and start wearing them again. For those who may not be familiar with dusters, basically it is a long jacket, the most common ones these days are sheer.

If you got rid of them long ago then you can find pretty ones like this one at Ulla Popken in sizes 12 to 34.

Print Tops from MiB

Making It Big (MIB) has been around for many years. When they started out their clothing was what I would call boxy but the last few years they upped their game and started bringing things in in the right places for a more tailored look. Their new spring line of tops is a bit iffy, though. The cuts are good but some of the pattern choices are not, they are something I would expect for a different price point. That being said, MIB is not without merit as I did find two tops I really like.

The plus size Lola Crossover Top with cross hatch pattern is available in sizes 3x to 7x for $99:

The plus size Milan Tunic is a nice mixture of patterns and solids available in sizes 3x to 7x for $95:

As you can see the sizes at MIB are unique, one of the reasons I love them is because they offer a higher size range for a market of women that are often ignored by retailers. Have a look and maybe you will find a gem or two that speaks to you.

Stripe It Up and Down

Whether you are a fan or not, stripes are here with a vengeance this year. Expect to find them everywhere in all shapes and sizes, directions and colors. I love stripes (almost as much as I love dots) but I seem to be most attracted to the classic look of black and white stripes.

Monif C has combined my love for black and white multi-directional stripes with my love for her maxi dresses to offer the amazing Lourdes Cold Shoulder Dress ($198) which is currently on pre-order to ship in late April. This dress was here once before and it did so well she brought it back.
