L’Oreal Gold Nail Polish

Gold nail polish by L'Oreal Paris.

I finally had the opportunity last week to try the L’Oreal gold sparkle nail polish (#580 “because you’re worth it”) I picked up on sale at Shopper’s.

Nails polished with gold polish by L'Oreal.

It is a sheer-ish polish. I used two coats but should have used three as I noticed sheer spots the next day (should have done it under better lighting too). I am not a fan of the color (although my Instagram friends liked it). I do not think it looks nice with my skin tone — it would probably look better on someone with a tan or at least more color than my white little hands — I might be more of a silver sparkle kind of person.

This gold sparkle nail polish is by L'Oreal.

I am not impressed with the quality of this polish either. Within two days the pinkies were chipped and I do not even use those fingers for much. It is also very surprising since I had a base and top coat on. I probably could have touched them up but I am not a touch up kind of nail polish wearer.

Gold nail polish by L'Oreal Paris.

I will probably save it to use as decor for nail art, or perhaps an accent nail but I do not see myself doing a full set of nails with this polish but who knows, as it gets closer to the holidays I may change my mind.

Plus Size Gauze Tops

Turquoise beads on a black gauze tunic.

The days get longer and warmer as we head toward summer. Some parts of Canada will be incredibly comfortable while others (hand up) will be hot an humid. Going in and out of air conditioned places seems like a constant battle. In their latest video, Ulla Popken suggests gauze tops as an option for layering in warmer weather (FYI: gauze is generally made of cotton). Have a look:

Ulla Popken has a few different styles of plus size gauze tops in their store that I like.

There is the Cotton Gauze Tunic Blouse shown on the spokes model in the video which also comes in five solid color options. It is a pretty reasonable price at $39.

There are beaded and embroidered gauze tunics ranging from $49 to $59. I absolutely love the black one with the turquoise beads (has turquoise ever been as hot as it has the last few years?).

If you want something with a collar then there are the plus size hankie hem gauze shirts. I especially like the print (shown on one of models and video) and purple ones. These shirts are $39.

Ulla Popken offers sizes 12 to 34 and ships in and outside of the U.S.

The Long Skirt

This chevron print long maxi skirt is from eShakti.

Switch up the bottom separates in your closet with the addition of the long skirt, or maxi skirt if you prefer. The maxi skirt, like the maxi dress goes past the lower calf to touch the tops of the feet to give the full flow appeal that only a really long skirt can give. eShakti has three beautiful print long skirts available in sizes XS to 6X for $99.95 (until May 12 they are offering — Buy 2 get 2nd 40% or buy 3 and get on free — on everything, not just skirts). Unlike other retailers if you enter your height eShakti will customize it.

All three of the skirts have great retro prints and are basically made the same with six panels. Another great feature is they all have pockets (love skirts with pockets)!

Turquoise and Red Statement

Red and Turquoise statement necklace from the Sculpted Tree on Etsy.

When it comes to color coordinating, turquoise and red are at the top of my list of favorites. One of the best ways to combine colors if you are not comfortable doing it with your clothing is via jewelry; especially statement necklaces like this one from Sculpted Tree shop on Etsy. As well as the colors, I like the contrast of sizes and shapes.

The jewelry artisan, Eleanor Brett Lewis-Deweese, combined bamboo coral and turquoise colored beads to make this three strand necklace available on her Etsy shop for $135.

Puzzled Nail Art

Cover Girl Pink-finity nail polish.

I follow a lot of nail art bloggers for fun and inspiration. The inspiration part came in when I decided I wanted to kick my three year spurt of picking at my nails and cuticles until they were raw habit. I used looking at the lovely cuticles of others and it worked. My cuticles are looking pretty damn good. I have not ventured much into the world of nail art myself though I have wanted to. The basic wearing a new color on the ring finger (which is fun too) is pretty and the lady bug art I did years ago are the extent of my experience.

Anyway, I have been really admiring puzzle pieces. There are more than a few variations on Youtube. My first attempt involved creating a white outline but it was a really messy process which I did not take pictures. I decided to go with a simpler technique offered by Jocelyn from Polishpedia. She makes it looks so easy.

Let me tell you, it is not! Ok, it is not super hard either but it is not as easy as it looks in the video. Speaking of video, you can watch her instructions:

My Puzzle Pieces Nail Art

I loved the pale color of Cover Girl’s Pink-finity (#140) but after a few days I was itching to put some nail art on it.

Cover Girl Pink-finity nail polish.

My original plan was to coordinate it with Julep’s Alley, which is a bright sparkly blue, but I ended up grabbing the Lena, a creamy teal, instead. The color blocking still look great together but you know what it is like when you have your heart set on something.

In the video the nail artist put the tape on all her nails first. I chose to do one at a time because knowing me the tape from one nail would accidentally touch the wet polish of another. I also reused the tape one more time (that is the recycler in me) as you can see from the third image. I did all the boxes on both hands and allowed them to dry before I went on to make the dots with my dotting tool. I then did all the blue dots first, followed by the pink ones. A top coat is a must to smooth things out. It will still be a little bumpy where the puzzle pieces join and takes a bit longer to dry.

Step by Step images of nail art for puzzle pieces.

Ok, it is not hideous by any means. There were many spots I would have done over because they smudged or the circle was more of an oval. I do think it is a good first attempt (this style). I especially like how the thumb one turned out.

Two color nail art puzzle pieces.

A few things I have learned from this experience:

  • Patience is required for nail art.
  • Make sure there is enough light.
  • Start with weak hand first (I already knew that but ignored it anyway).
  • Don’t rush — make sure you don’t have to be somewhere in an hour.
  • Don’t load up the brush with polish.
  • Practice may not be perfect but it does make it better.
  • Have different sized dotting tools on hand. My tool was too small.

Overall, I did enjoy doing this and want to do it again with different colors. I would recommend giving it a try if you have the time and are feeling creative. It is fun watching it come together.

Blue Iris Jin Soon

Two coats of JinSoon's Blue Iris nail polish.

Every since Sarah Conley from Style It posted in her Instagram and blog post about Jin Soon’s Blue Iris nail polish I have been coveting it from afar. After a few weeks I went to the Jin Soon website with every intention of buying the polish, I had it in the cart and it was going to be mine. Then the Canadian shipping came up. My options were UPS Standard $20.32 or UPS Worldwide Expedited $78.74. I kid you not!

The polish costs $18 already, and $20 to ship seemed a little outrageous so I did not get it. I sulked on Twitter for a few weeks and then Sarah tweeted me that Sephora also carried it. I surfed over there to find that they had a Canadian site and broke down and ordered it. The bottle was four bucks more at $22 (which kind of annoyed me because we are practically at par) but shipping was $7.95 (totally reasonable) and then almost three dollars for tax (no biggy). In total, I paid almost $33 for Jin Soon’s Blue Iris. This is the most expensive polish I will ever buy, EVER (never again, never, I tell you). I just wanted it so bad — therapy please.

When the Sephora box arrived I of course had to share it on Instagram. Here is the box the little bottle of polish came in:

My blue iris Jin Soon nail polish arrived from Sephora in a big box.

I could not wait to put it on. It is so pretty! It is actually deeper than it appears here:

Two coats of JinSoon's Blue Iris nail polish.

These shiny nails have two coats of nail polish on. There is not even a top coat on these beauty. They are all shiny on its own.

I loved this polish on my fingernails but I am looking forward to having it on my toes.

5 Earth Day Do’s

Hands holding earth globe.

April 22 is Earth Day. Are you going to do anything to celebrate? Here are five quiet things you can do on your own to celebrate. Of course, because this is a shopping blog, all items are related to clothing or shopping.

Hands holding earth globe.

5 Earth Day Do’s

Clean and Share

Clean your closet. Instead of throwing things out make a pile of things that…

  • can be made into rags like old t-shirts (this prevents stuff from ending up in landfills and decreases your use of paper towels),
  • can be given away to charity (the Diabetes and Cerebral Palsy organizations are always looking for donations as a fundraiser),
  • you have not worn but want to keep. This last pile gets moved to the most visible part of your closet with the plan of forcing yourself to wear them over the next three months. If you do not, then put it in one of the before mentioned piles during the next closet cleaning.

Think Shop

Make an extra special effort to avoid spur of the moment shopping today! Think about whether the item you want to purchase is similar to something you already have in your closet? Is it a fad piece that you will not be able to wear next season/year? Does it go with more than one thing in your closet?

Purchase Effect

If you have decided to buy something think of where and how it was made and how your purchase will affect the planet. I know, heavy right? A good place to start is by reading the label.

Reward Local Businesses

Invest in a locally made item — I say invest for two reasons. First, you are supporting and rewarding a local business with your purchase and second, making local purchases tend to cost more but they are usually better made too so it is a two-fold investment. If you cannot buy locally then at least purchase something from your continent.

Bag It, Honey!

Make sure any bags you receive while shopping get recycled and not tossed in the garbage. Or better yet, make a point of taking your own shopping bags with you. I use Baggu, a Canadian company that makes phenomenally looking shopping bags in oodles of color options that are so durable and fit easily into my handbag.

These are are a few little things you can do to honour Earth Day, I am sure you can think of many more. Make an extra effort today and try to carry it on through the year.

Happy Earth Day!

Unique Plus Size Swimwear

Simple black ruffle swimsuit from Monif C.

For truly unique plus size swimwear you must visit Monif C. But be warned, with that unique designer swimsuit comes a steep price. Monif C is best known for her amazing Marilyn convertible dress; a few years ago she introduced a few swimsuits and each consecutive year there have been more options to tease and delight us. Most sell out fast, sometimes before they are even available (via pre-orders). Here are a few (I had like ten which is most of the line and cut it down to four) of my current favorites:

The Bikini

Plus size swimsuit separates that include the option of a full brief and a bikini top are going to be even hotter than last summer as more women impose their right to bare arms, legs, and bellies. Monif has a few print and sold options to choose from. I love the simplicity of this black and white pattern. And doesn’t that top look like it was made to support a plus size woman’s breasts?

This two piece multi-directional striped bikini is sold in separates from Monif C.

Active or Modest or Sensitive

Whether you are very active in the water, a little modest, or perhaps you burn easily on the chest and arms. The Malibu Surfer suit is glorious with its pseudo-peacock print and long black sleeves. I adore this one.

Modest swimsuit from Monif C.

Peek-a-Boo

This peek-a-boo shoulder one piece comes in a few color options but the burnt orange is so bright and so festive. The deep V shows your sexy means business.

This bright orange swimsuit with peek-a-boo shoulders is from Monif C.

Ruffles

The Trinidad Ruffle swimsuit also comes in a few color options but I love the basic black. A simple swimsuit is made pretty by the addition of an all over ruffle, reminiscent of my favorite peasant tops, and a few hip dangles.

This black ruffle top swimsuit is from Monif C.

Monif C offers plus size swimsuits in sizes 12 to 24.

Tunic Love

Plus size tops from Making it Big.

Love, love, love this tunic from Making it Big. I love the color, the length and that it has some elastic in the back to give it even more shape. This is one of my favorite tops from them that I have seen in a while. It is a bit pricey though at $109 to $119. It looks great with the cotton pants but the length would work great with leggings or skinny jeans too.

If you are not familiar with Making It Big (MiB) they are an American company that offers sizes 2x to 8x. That is right, nothing below 2x. Something almost unheard of in the plus size clothing industry.

Justine LeGault Graces Elle

Justine LeGault for the May Issue of Elle Quebec!

Plus size model Justine LeGault is on the cover of the May 2013 Quebec issue of Elle Magazine. The size 14/16 model has been strutting her stuff locally and abroad for a few years. According to her Facebook profile it looks like she is signed with Heffner Management, Muse Model Management, and Milk Management.

Justine LeGault for the May Issue of Elle Quebec!

The Elle Quebec cover is gorgeous and I think groundbreaking because her thighs are in full view and she has not been photoshopped to look like a porcelain doll. Here is a behind the scenes look of the photo shoot (it is in French), sorry if it automatically started playing when you opened this page:

I think Justine looks gorgeous on the cover and if I see this on the stands when I am there I plan to purchase to support it.

Being a Julep Maven: Take Two

April Brights from Julep's April Maven box.

In March I mentioned I became a Boho Glam Julep Maven. I am following up with news about my second box. The April Brights box contained two Julep colors, Kaylen (neon orange crème) and Lena (teal with gold shimmer), a tube of Julep’s Mighty Nail and Cuticle Serum, and some blue rock candy on a stick (FYI: if you are going to send candy, make it chocolate).

To back things up a bit. Even though last month was my first box, this month was my first pre-notification that my maven box would soon be on its way. On the March 20th I approved my Maven April Brights box and ordered a few discounted add-ons: the Electric blueberry frost polish and the Freedom Polymer Top Coat both for $4.99. I was told I would have until the 24th to change my mind or my selections. On the 29th I received two separate emails, the first telling me my April Maven box was on its way, and the second telling me my add-ons were on their way (they are always shipped separately from Maven boxes).

I was very excited when my Julep Maven box arrived and tweeted/insta it immediately on opening.

April Brights from Julep's April Maven box.

Here is a closer look at the colors. Lena turned out to be greener than I thought it was going to, it looked more turquoise on the site.

Here are the Lena and Kaylen nail polishes from Julep's April Brights Maven box.

I had a plan in my head for my nails before the polished arrived. I wanted to paint my nails all blue except for the ring fingers which would be orange — a popular and simple nail trend at the moment. When I opened up my polishes and started painting I was so excited and before I knew it all my nails were painted teal. I remembered another simple nail art video I had seen where a simple brush stroke of another color is painted down the middle. When the teal dried I did just that. Unfortunately, the orange polish is a bit transparent and turned out to be brown on the nail. I posted it to Instagram and friends said they liked it — one said it reminded her of peacock eyes (this image is from iPod).

Nail art with the April brights polish.

But I still felt I needed to “fix” it. I put a white strip down the middle, added another coat of orange, then a few teal dots. Way more busy than I originally intended for the April Brights and to my eye, kind of muddy.

Orange and teal nail art with Julep polish.

I wore it for a couple days until I finally got what I wanted. I have been tickled orange ever since.

Orange and teal manicure with Julep nail polish.

There is one coat of the teal and two coats of the orange. I probably could have done three. I am happy with the colors this month.
