The Statement Necklace

red necklace from GEMLYN on Etsy

If you have not figured it out yet, Etsy is an excellent online source for finding unique pieces of jewelry (as well as plus size clothing). I came across this Fire Engine Red Branch Coral Statement Necklace by GEMLYN today and I think it would be an absolutely fabulous way to dress up that old boring black dress (or grey/navy/white…)  in your closet. It is definitely a statement piece! It is available at Etsy for $118. Too expensive for your pocket book? Have a look around Etsy and you will find jewelry designers who offer their wares in all price ranges.

Maroon Wool Fedora

women's maroon fedora from Avon

I know it seems a bit premature to start talking about wool but even though we might not be ready temperature wise the fall lines are starting to roll out at a fast pace including Avon. One of my favorite pieces from the Mark brochure is the Foxy Maroon Fedora (259-417). It is 100% wool with a faux leather band and is only $30. It is a perfect color for ringing in fall — that is if fall ever gets here. But who’s rushing?

Baggu Bags

colorful shopping bags from Baggu

No one ever said that shopping bags cannot be fashionable. They totally can. The shopping bags I am addicted to and always recommend to people are called Baggu. eco-friendly nylon bags from Baggu

Baggu bags are ethically made in China from 100% ripstop nylon. What that means is they are pretty darn durable — each bag can carry 50lbs. Baggu offers a one year limited warranty against defects in material and workmanship although I have never had any problems with mine. All the seams are still intact and the bags still look gorgeous. When it is time to retire the bag, Baggu offer a $1 credit if you send it back for them to recycle. They have a flat shipping rate of $12 to Canada which makes me love them more (you know how I feel about shipping).

I have had mine for a few years and I love them and always get compliments on them. The colors are intensely rich and do not fade with washing. Yes, washing! I can actually wash these bags in my machine (and hang them to dry). You cannot say that about a lot of the freebie bags out there. Not to mention the freebie bags usually have a giant logo on the side. Baggu’s logo is a one inch or so tag that simply says “Baggu”.

I am mentioning them today because they had a sale a few weeks ago and I decided to stock up for Christmas. I know, I am super early for Christmas shopping but last year I left it too late so I decided to get them while I was thinking about it. I like to use Baggu bags instead of traditional wrapping paper (my eco-friendly god child especially appreciates this) for gifts. That way there is no waste and the receiver has a bonus gift. Of course I bought a few extra for myself including the “Big Baggu” which holds twice the size of stuff.

As you can see the bags have their own little pouch that you can refold the bag into or just stuff it in. I am neurotic so I fold them (or if I have to, refold after my husband has done it). I always have at least one in my handbag but also comfortably carry three. I used to use them only for none grocery shopping because I was carrying them in my purse but with my collection growing I’m slowly getting rid of the ugly bags as they die.

For the basic Baggu one bag costs $8, three+ bags $7.50 each, and six+ bags cost $6.50 each. The double duty bag I mentioned is $12. There is also a baby Baggu which is perfect for a trip to the drug store. They are $6. They have a few canvas designs worth looking at too.

Floral Print Handbags

Brighton Bloomsberry Flower Print Handbag from Zappos

Floral print dresses are going to be everywhere but what if you are not into full body prints? If you love floral in smaller doses then there is the option of going with floral print hand bags. Like the Brighten Bloomsberry Soft Shoulder from Zappos for $200. I know, subtle print right? I love the splash of purple mixed with pink and black.

But you can’t appreciate this bag until you see the video which shows off the little side pockets. Perfect for the iPod Touch on one side and for the husband’s phone on the other. And most importantly, the inside is a lovely shade of purple and has a divider pocket to keep the essentials from getting lost in the bag’s depth. I’d ditch the flower key chain though.

My Evans Order

Evans Plus Size Clothing

I made my first Evans order on September 28th. It arrived today! That’s 22 days (14 days longer than ordering from ASOS). I paid £7.50 which is about $12 Canadian for shipping. As I mentioned with my ASOS order shipping costs are a big peeve of mind. $12, I can definitely handle.

I have always loved Evans’ fashions but I chose to order at this time because of the release of the new Beth Ditto line and because I wanted a red winter coat. I’m not a crazy shopper. I put a lot of thought into what I’m buying and how it will fit with what I have. But mostly, I have to love something before I buy. Lack of sleep may lead to an impulse buy (read on).

From the Ditto collection I ordered the heart print hanki hem top, £39.50 (I didn’t fall in love with this tunic length top until I saw it worn by another blogger — can’t for the life of me find the blog or else I’d link to it) and the black extra high waist leggings, £20.00. I also ordered a hooded duffle coat, £49.50, in an awesome bright red and a black jersey jumpsuit, £35.00, (something I thought I would never do and will now blame on the before mentioned lack of sleep. As I’m sitting here I remembered another reason why I don’t like jumpsuits — you have to completely undress to pee). I found a coupon online for 15% off so I saved almost $22. So basically I got free shipping and a bonus.

It was super easy to shop at Evans. Their website is well laid out and since they only sell plus size there were no disappointments as they have a huge size range (14 to 32), great product images and the shopping cart is easy to use. I had no problems what-so-ever placing my order. I paid for my order using Paypal; again with no problem. After my order was placed, I received an email receipt for my order and another email the next day letting me know my order was “dispatched”.

As I said in the intro my parcel arrived today. I was surprised that it wasn’t in a box but a large opaque grey bag. Each item was individually packaged in plastic and the coat and jumpsuit came with hangers. Along with the package came duty, taxes, and a handling fee. Most likely because it was over $100. My parcel contents cost £122.40. Before they can charge the duty they have to convert my parcel contents total to Canadian. On the day of processing the exchange was 1.604900 which brought my total up to $196.44 Canadian (about $50 more than what I had worked out when I made my purchase three weeks ago — the joy of fluctuating dollars). An 18 % duty was applied = $35.35 + HST of $30.13 and a $5 handling fee. To pick up my package from the post office it cost $70.49. I was expecting to pay around $50. And I had to sign for the parcel.

I pretty much love everything. The jacket isn’t bulky, is super soft and has a silky lining. One of the things I liked about it was the fact that it had both the buttons and a zipper; although I’m a bit concerned about the zipper which is plastic and didn’t give me the impression it will hold up to daily use — time will tell. The heart print hanki top is so cute, even the man said he liked it. It’s super soft jersey on top. I thought the arms would be tight but they are super comfortable. I could use a little more room in the chest area where it connects with the patterned material which isn’t stretchy at all. I bought the extra high waist leggings to go with the hanki top. They don’t have a lot of give but I love the high waist and there the added option of folding them over. Now for the jumpsuit. I think it’s really cute but I would never wear it out in public. It will definitely be I’m home for the day outfit — it’s that whole having to undress from top to bottom thing when I have to use the washroom and is not really appropriate for this time of year; too cold.

Overall, it was a good shopping experience. Next time I order I will try to keep my order total under $100 to hopefully considerably reduce expected duty/tax charges. If you are looking for some where new to shop I recommend giving them a try. Sign up for their newsletter to get the latest sale and promotion information. If you have tried them already please share your experience in the comments.

I Heart This Bag

Abigayle Bag

I was on my way in the grocery store yesterday when a woman was coming out. In her cart was this bag, I instantly fell in love and practically accosted her to find out where she got it. She told me she bought it at the Naturalizer but she was sure they didn’t have anymore. I haven’t been able to check the local store but I did find it online. The picture does not do the Cab Sav color the justice that seeing it in sunlight did. I’m just not sure I love it enough to pay $75 for it. If I had this bag I would take it every where I went until I wore the finish off it.

Weird Bags

Designer Handbag

I was surfing over at Handbago and came across what I would call a weird handbag. Obviously, this is purely subjective and weird doesn’t necessarily mean bad. Ok, maybe one or two of them do. What do you think, do these handbags qualify as “weird” or is there something here that speaks to you?

This Laura Buccellati handbag makes me think of the Adam’s Family. And it’s only $2600. Mortgage on one hand, cousin It on the other.

Designer Handbag

This Serpui Marie clutch makes me think of my childhood — I used to love making pompoms. It’s $165.

Designer Handbags with Pompoms

This Diane Von Furstenberg bag does it right with the purple and studs but then it gets a bit weird with the circular appliques. They remind me of pop up tub drains (probably because we just replaced ours). It retails for $450.

Designer Handbags with Applicques

This chihuahua shaped Louis Vuitton scares me. There isn’t a price listed but I imagine it isn’t cheap.

Mood Rings

Mood Rings

These handcrafted glass bubble ringsare so cute. Bluembrownlee Art from Etsy has given a new twist on the retro look of the mood rings by creating Moody Friends with the emoticons we use in cyberspace. There are seven to choose from: exhausted, neutral, naughty, super happy, shocked, happy, and of course, sad. You can buy your favorite emotion for an affordable $7 plus shipping. Or you can get the whole set of seven for $35 — one for every day of the week. I love them all but my favorite is “shocked”.
