DIY Costume: Retro Pin-Up

We are getting dangerous close to do-it-yourself (DIY) costume time. One of my favorite DIY costume ideas is going retro. Search through your closet looking for pieces you can use to make yourself into a retro pin-up. Great items include black or nude pumps, polka-dot tops, and black pencil skirts. Tomb Raider Costume

Not surprisingly I haven’t been able to find a plus size Lara Croft, Tomb Raider costume. But if you are a good raider you can find some items in your closet or at your local discount store. Lara Croft a.k.a. Angelina Jolie

Personally I prefer the movie version over the game version. Mainly because one is worn by Angelina Jolie and one isn’t. But mostly because I find the movie version more sexy than slutty. There are a number of different costumes to choose from but the one at right would be the easiest (or at least cheapest) to replicate.

What’s needed:

tight black short sleeve tee shirt or tank top
short black khaki shorts
utility belt / duo gun holster / two guns (eBay)
combat boots (Zappos)
long braid

A Sexy Halloween

If you want to have a sexy Halloween costume (but not one of those over the top sexy lingerie costumes if you know what I mean) then Torrid is your must stop Halloween shop. They released their Halloween look book last week although I must say it is not their best year. All the costumes are basically the same style with just a different theme. But still it’s Torrid and they are forgiven. The costumes this year come in combo sizes 1/2 and 3/4 for $66 (the cute stockings are sold separately for $8). Don’t wait for sales on your favorites because you want to make sure that it gets shipped on time which isn’t always the case when coming from outside Canada so decide and order early.

My favorite choices from their selection are the Lady Bug costume, Queen of Wonderland, and the Pirate Wench:

The make-up for all three of these could go either way — super sexy or sexy evil. Switch it up if you have more than one occasion to wear it.

Other costumes are sailor, riding hood, vampire, tea party hostess, French maid, Miss Wonderland, pirate, referee, gypsy, and a cop. They usually add a few more as the season wears on.

Plus Size Marilyn Costume

One of the most glamorous women in the history of Hollywood is Marilyn Monroe (1926 – 1952). She was just starting to become a respected actor before her untimely death — having completed thirty-one films. She has been an idol for curvy women since she hit her 30s although there is some debate as to the size of those curves. Her weight ranged from 118 – 140 lbs so even at her heaviest she was no bigger than a size 12 (and us girls all know that in the fashion industry anything bigger than a 6 is plus size). Regardless of her size, she was curvy, not scrawny, and we still love to emulate her.

The scene and costume she wore from her movie Seven Year Itch is the most popular costume women gravitate towards. If you are thinking of a Marilyn costume but are unfamiliar with the famous subway grate in which her white flowing dress gets a gust of air, or you just want to get into character, here’s the famous clip to inspire you:

Plus Size Pirate Costumes

Pirates have always been a popular choice for Halloween costumes. But Johnny Depp and his Jack Sparrow interpretation in Pirates of the Caribbean have made them even more popular. And sexy too.

Keira Knightley was not the first woman to grace the film screen as a buccaneer. Geena Davis played swashbuckling pirate Morgan Adams in Cutthroat Island (1995).

My Favorite Buccaneer Movies

Want to add a few pirate movies to your library? Here are five classic films that are also my favorites for action, fun, and great characters. Watching a few pirate movies will help get you into character.

Chronological order:

The Ice Pirates (1984)
Cutthroat Island (1995)
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

Of all the female pirates I have seen, Geena Davis is my favorite.

Some “plus” sizes only fit a chest 42″to 44″ and a waist of 35″ to 38″ while others went up to 18 to 22. The prices vary from $25 to well over $100. They ship to the United States and Canada within a week. They have at least thirteen different styles of plus size women pirates costumes to choose from.

Costume Craze — Read sizing carefully. Some of their plus or “full” sizes are 12 to 14 and others are 16 to 24. The prices range from affordable to expensive, $30 to $140. They have a nice flat shipping rate in the U.S. but also ship to Canada and internationally. They have at least nine different styles of plus size women pirates costumes to choose from.
